Alternative Energy Sources
You've come to the right place to learn about alternative energy sources!
My alternative energy research began some 20+ years ago while living in Northern California. I often drove past giant windmill farms, they were mesmerizing to watch and learning that the energy they produced supplied thousands of households with electricity- it wasn’t long until I hoped to have a smaller version for my home one-day. I was curious about what was available for the homeowner and found limited resources and options much different than what is available today.
The Beginning
When I relocated to the Midwest, my research began in earnest. I had purchased some undeveloped land where I will build a simple home that is healthy to live in and as much off the grid as I can afford. Living in SW Ohio, a very conservative area, it was a challenge to assemble a team of people that had a similar mindset and it took more than a year of interviewing to find them.
My consulting team now consists of two architects, one that is designing my home and one that helps me keep this site current and owns the only house in the area with a significant number of solar panels. A builder whose family has been building individual homes for several generations and has a very practical approach. All are very interested in teaching about alternative energy sources, green construction and healthy homes.
For My Own Home...
I evaluated every alternative energy option and combination. I didn’t want to leave a stone unturned and pushed my team to evaluate options that were just making it to market. Ultimately, we have decided on a geothermal system and when budget allows will augment that system to take me off the grid. The geothermal system will supply approximately 70% of the energy needs for both heating and cooling so to truly get off the grid we’ll need to add solar, wind or something else. I’m still hoping for a windmill, but SW Ohio is not an area with high winds, so I’m counting on technological advances.
In just the last 5 years, the advances in alternative energy have made it possible to build a home or retrofit an existing home and be totally off the electrical grid with a wide variety of products. There are so many more options to choose from and we now have the ability to do so one-step at a time or all at once. The products and innovations that are in development at this moment will make transitioning to alternative energy even more affordable.
